Varsity Boys Basketball - Campbell Hall basketball ready to move up
By Gerry Gittelson, Columnist
Article Last Updated: 11/04/2008 10:55:35 PM PST

After winning three Southern Section titles and three CIF state titles over the past four years, Campbell Hall of North Hollywood's boys' basketball team faces a tougher road this season, as the defending Southern Section Div. IV-AA champion Vikings have been moved up two levels to Div. III-AA despite an enrollment of a little more than 500 students.

New boys' and girls' playoff groupings have been released by the Southern Section, and now Campbell Hall must compete in the playoffs against some of the area's largest schools such as Hart of Newhall, Agoura, Moorpark and Newbury Park.

The groupings were based on enrollment and playoff performance over the past two seasons, and had nothing to do with league affiliation or location.

"You can say we moved up one division, but the Southern Section added a division, too, from five to now six this year, so we actually moved up more," Campbell Hall coach Terry Kelly said. "But as far as playing big schools, that doesn't bother us. It's never bothered us. I love it that some of the bigger basketball schools in the Valley like Harvard-Westlake (of Studio City) and Crespi (of Encino) are lower than us. It speaks to our success."

Harvard-Westlake, eliminated by national power Mater Dei of Santa Ana last year in the second round of the top-level Div. I-AA playoffs, was moved all the way down to Div. III-A - a five-tier demotion.

Varsity Girls Tennis - The Girls' Varsity Tennis Team won their Olympic League match against Archer 16-2 at Valley College. The win gives the Vikings their second Olympic League Championship in a row. Ava Sadeghi swept all 3 of her singles matches and Sarah Lee and Priya Amirtraj won both of their 2 singles matches. Sabrina Santamaria and Jenny Cherry, and Bree Sinclair and Hanna Feldman, and Jessica Harrison and Ellis Kim all swept their 3 doubles matches. The Vikings are now done with the regular season next up for the Vikings are the playoffs which start on Thursday November 13 at Valley College. The Vikings head into the playoffs peaking at the right time winning their last 6 matches in a row. The Vikings the number 6th ranked team in Division 1 finish the regular season at 14-3 and 11-1 in League play.

Varsity Boys Basketball - New basketball playoff divisions announced
Southern Section shuffles the postseason deck in search of parity; Campbell Hall is promoted, Harvard-Westlake moves down.

The Southern Section released its revamped playoff divisions Monday for boys' and girls' basketball, and there are some big changes.

Using a combination of enrollment and competitive equity to place teams, the divisions are supposed to create more balance and reward schools that have done well in the playoffs the last two seasons while helping schools that haven't done well by dropping them into a less-competitive spot. There are six divisions, and two championships in each.

North Hollywood Campbell Hall, the state Division IV champion the last two seasons, was put in Division III-AA and will have to face much stronger playoff opponents, including Santa Margarita and Bellflower St. John Bosco from the tough Trinity League, Anaheim Canyon, Newhall Hart and La Canada.

The Vikings only have a school enrollment of 536 but their success in basketball puts them in against some much bigger schools.

"If the reason for this is competitive equity, we're right where we should be," Campbell Hall Coach Terry Kelly said. "It's a different challenge for us."

North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake, which competed in Division I-AA last season, was dropped to Division III-A and will compete in a division that includes Brea Olinda, La Habra Sonora and Oak Park.

"I was one who didn't care if we were up or down but figured we'd be higher than that," Harvard-Westlake Coach Greg Hilliard said. "It means people will put more pressure on us to win the championship."

Varsity Girls Tennis - The Girls' Varsity Tennis Team lost a real close match to Palos Verdes 10-8 at Palos Verdes High school. The match was decided on the very last set of the day a match in doubles the Vikings lost 7-6 (7-5) in the tiebreaker. The match was so close that if the Vikings would have won that tiebreaker the Vikings would have tied in sets 9-9 and lost by 1 game. If the Vikings would have won that last set 7-5 they would have tied in games and sets.. It was a very exciting match and our girls should be proud of the way they fought and competed. A match like this will only help the Vikings down the road, and we will continue to improve throughout the season. Palos Verdes was a semifinalist in Division 1 last year and has everyone back on their team this year. Sarah Lee and Sabrina Santamaria both swept all 3 of their singles matches and Priya Amitraj won 1 single match. Jessica Harrison and Hanna Feldman won 1 doubles match. JH Football - Nutrition!

Start to develop good habits now rather than later. You will need adequate fuel and recovery time to maintain optimal performance in school (athletically and academically). While we are all at the mercy of the time schedules we are committed to, we can control how we fuel up for the day.

Eat breakfast! If not a full breakfast with carbohydrates and proteins, at the very least, have a glass of juice, a fruit or something with some natural sugar in it first thing in the morning. This helps your body replace any blood sugar used/lost while sleeping.

Drink water! Eat snacks throughout the day! Drink more water!

Eat lunch! Avoid especially fibrous foods during lunch, since it is most likely the last meal before practice/games and you don't want to irritate your digestive system.

Eat Dinner! Drink water before bed!

In general eat a lot of food, but please try to avoid deep fried foods and processed sugars (get your sugar naturally as much as possible from the fruits, vegetables and starches you consume).

Establish routines that work for you, but make the most of your time. Have the courage to sacrifice a little leisure time to concentrate on taking care of yourself, which includes your studies, athletics and time to rest and recover. Whether you have a test, homework assignment, project, practice or game, food, water and sleep are essential.

DRINK WATER BEFORE PRACTICE ALL DAY!!!...not just 1/2 an hour before!

Go Vikings!

Varsity Football - As we start to use the new weight room, make sure you have both flats and cleats with you at practice. Also, you may need a water bottle until the water fountains are completed.

JH Girls Tennis - Tryouts will be held Tuesday 9/9 through Thursday 9/11 from 3:45-5:00. Students wanting to tryout should meet in front of the Lower Gym. The final roster will be posted on-line no later than noon on Saturday 9/13.

8th Grade Girls Volleyball - Tryouts will be held Tuesday 9/9 through Thursday 9/11 from 3:45-5:00 in the Lower Gym. The final roster will be posted on-line no later than noon on Saturday 9/13.

7th Grade Girls Volleyball - Tryouts will be held Tuesday 9/9 through Thursday 9/11 from 3:45-5:00 in the Lower Gym. The final roster will be posted on-line no later than noon on Saturday 9/13.

Varsity Cross Country - Summer Conditioning has started up for the 2008 Cross Country Campaign.

Why run the summer conditioning?

1. We need to be in shape for the season. We would spend the entire season getting in proper running shape. To become successful, a distance runner needs a certain amount of base mileage to be able to complete the workouts.

2. Starting running as well as starting school can create a lot of stress. Your body must adapt back to the school schedule and introducing running can creat havoc on you systems.

To check out the summer running locations and time check the calendar section on the website.
